“More than meets the eye” is an idiom that comes to mind when we think about the first time we saw the home at 389 Twenty-Seventh Street. At first impression the home is a handsome one story Victorian that sits behind a thoughtfully designed stacked stone fence and meticulously manicured landscaping. While the details, painted in rich blue and warm white paint, appear to be original the glass orb light fixture illuminating the doorway is a nod to modern and a subtle hint on what is about to come.

Stepping into the entry hall, which is flanked bythe lounge and the library, our eye is drawn to the expansive great room and a wall of south facing windows. It is now evident that this home has undergone an extensive down-to-the-studs renovation and the once single story “jewel box” is now an expansive three level home with all modern systems.

The finishes are clearly the result of a keen eye with the ability to marry classic and modern features creating a timeless environment and the layout a testament to the success in creating a home that is expansive but intimate at the same time.

What impressed us in the light filled kitchen was how it appears effortless. Open shelving give a sense of space and randomly hung light fixtures a bit of playfulness. However, upon closer inspection, this was a serious kitchen that was designed with great care and purpose.  Luxury level appliances such as Jenn Air and Thermador fit the bill for the home chef and include; a 5 burner gas cook-top and range hood, convection oven, microwave, warming drawer, and two dishwashers. Sometimes it’s the little things that really make an impact and here it’s the Jenn Air Refrigerator with its exclusive Obsidian (black) interior. All impressive, but the feature most extraordinary is the brilliant execution of installing four skylights on this level when an entire second level is above! The three skylights in the kitchen are also backlit so when the sun goes down they do not become dark voids in the ceiling.

The living room is wrapped with walls of windows, south facing for amazing light and west facing obscured for maximum privacy, and the homes second fireplace is located here. To expand the living area the room opens to the impressively large deck that has gas and water supplies for an outdoor kitchen and utilities installed for overhead heaters so this area is usable even on chilly nights.

Translucent glass panels separate the dining area and the staircase, one to the master bedroom level and the other down to additional bedrooms and entertaining areas.  Ascending to the second level you are welcomed with wonderful natural light from the skylights above. The master suite was designed with luxurious space and took advantage of the southern views which include the spires of St. Paul’s Church.  The adjoining bathroom is outfitted with a large walk-in shower and separate soaking tub, surely a welcome refuge. While the custom closets in the master bedroom are impressively roomy there is an additional room that serves as the dressing room with extra closets and access to the large private deck. If needed this room could easily serve as the homes fourth bedroom.

The garden level offers two large entertaining rooms including the billiard room that has a bank of cabinetry with an under-counter refrigerator and large sink allowing for independence from the kitchen. The adjoining room offers plenty of seating for lounging and opens to the patio with custom built-in seating. Finishing this level are the homes two additional bedrooms, two full baths and the laundry room.

Through the garden, which is designed for low maintenance, is the two story garage. A car lift allows for two car parking in the garage and an additional parking pad off of Comerford Alley creates parking for another car for a total of three car parking.

With close proximity to public transportation, shops, restaurants and free access 389 Twenty Seventh Street is an ideal city home location.
